Steelers Complete Comeback Win Over Commanders: National Reaction
Let's view the Steelers' come-from-behind victory over the Washington Commanders through the prism of national sports writers.
PITTSBURGH, PA — Five days after he was acquired from the New York Jets, new wide receiver Mike Williams caught the game-winning touchdown as the Steelers defeated the Washington Commanders 28-27 on Sunday.
Here's what football writers around the country are saying about the victory:
- Kevin Patra, NFL.com:"A trade deadline acquisition paid off immediately for Pittsburgh. Mike Williams caught a Russell Wilson sideline 32-yard shot with 2:27 remaining to help the Steelers overcome a 10-point second-half deficit. It's the type of play Pittsburgh envisioned when they moved to acquire Williams."
- Brooke Pryor, ESPN: "With the touchdown, Mike Williams became the fourth player in NFL history to score a fourth-quarter game-winning touchdown in his debut with a team after joining it midseason, and the first since Bill Larson in 1980,according to the Elias Sports Bureau."
- Albert Breer, Sports Illustrated: "As great as Mike Tomlin’s been—he’s now two wins from an 18th consecutive season at or above .500—the team hasn’t been what it was in his early years. The Steelers’ last playoff win was in 2016. Their last AFC title game was that year, too, and that’s the only trip they’ve made to the NFL’s final four over the past 14 years. Now, that’s holding the Steelers to a higher standard than most franchises. But as Tomlin likes to say, The standard is the standard. And he may, finally, have a team to meet the standard again."
- John Breech, CBS Sports: "This team is rarely mentioned in the same breath as the Chiefs, Bills or Ravens, but maybe it's time to put them in the conversation because they're looking better and better every week."
