Steelers Player Forced To Retire Because Of Injury
The Steelers have released a player whose career is over due to an injury suffered last season.
PITTSBURGH, PA — The Steelers on Monday released 2024 sixth-round pick Ryan Watts, who suffered a season-ending neck injury in the final preseason game of his rookie year.
"After consulting with our medical team, medical experts, and Ryan's representatives, we all agree that it is in Ryan's best interest to discontinue playing football at this time," Steelers general manager Omar Khan said in a statement. "We will continue to assist and support Ryan as he transitions to the next phase of his life."
Watts' injury occurred against the Detroit Lions in an Aug. 24 game. It initially was diagnosed as a stinger, but he was placed on injured reserve shortly thereafter, ending his season.
