Veteran Pittsburgh Sports Journalist Dies

A well-known retired Western Pennsylvania sports writer and editor has died.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Rich Emert, whose sports stories graced the pages of nearly every daily newspaper in Western Pennsylvania for decades, died unexpectedly on March 18. He was 74.

Mr. Emert was best known for his voluminous knowledge and extensive coverage of high school athletics, but he also covered the Steelers during their Super Bowl dynasty years of the 1970s and served as a sports editor. He worked for the Beaver County Times, Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Valley News Dispatch and Tribune-Review.

According to his obituary, Mr. Emert graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1968 and studied at Genefa College before obtaining a journalism degree from Point Park University.
