Virus Surfaces In Pittsburgh Area For 1st Time This Year

The Allegheny County Health Department has reported the first confirmed case of a specific virus in the area this year.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has identified its first case of the West Nile virus in the county this year.

The person who tested positive live in Plum. The unidentified person began experiencing fever, malaise, diarrhea, and anorexia. They are currently recovering at
home.

Beginning last Thursday, the department set up additional surveillance in the area and began conducting an investigation.

According to the CDC, between 70 and 80 percent of people who become infected with West Nile
virus do not develop symptoms and are not impacted. Approximately 20 percent of those who become infected will develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.
