Plum Army Sergeant Shot To Death On GA Military Base

Sgt. Nathan Hillman was shot in a Fort Stewart building by a fellow soldier, according to reports.

PLUM, PA — A Plum native and U.S. Army sergeant was shot and killed Monday in an incident at a Georgia military base.

Sgt. Nathan Hillman was shot in a Fort Stewart building around 10 a.m. by a fellow soldier who was taken into custody, Army Times reported. It's unclear whether Hillman was a specific or random target; the investigation into his death is ongoing.

"On Monday morning, the Spartan Family lost one of our own in a tragic and unexpected way," Col. Ethan J. Diven, commander of the "Spartan Brigade," 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, said in a statement.

"With deepest sorrow our hearts are with the families and units involved in the incident. Providing support to the impacted families and soldiers is our first priority. We are working closely with the Fort Stewart military police and U.S. Army criminal investigation division.”

Hillman joined the Army in 2015. At the time of his death, he was a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. He had one deployment to Afghanistan, and his awards included two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals and the Air Assault Badge.
