Tredyffrin Police in their October report offer tips to prevent becoming a victim of pickpockets.

These tips come after police reported an increase in pickpocketing over the past month. Police said shoppers at businesses in the Gateway Shopping Center specifically have reported pickpocketing.

"As the holiday shopping season approaches, it is particularly important to remain cognizant of your surroundings," police said. "Most incidents involve suspects distracting their victims to steal wallets, phones, or other valuables. Pickpocketing can happen quickly and without warning, so residents and visitors are reminded to stay alert and protect their belongings at all times."

Below are safety tips to avoid being pickpocketed:

  • Keep valuables secure — Carry purses and bags close to your body, with zippers fully closed and straps worn across your chest when possible.
  • Use front pockets — Avoid keeping wallets, phones, or cash in back pockets, as they are easy targets.
  • Stay aware — Be cautious if someone bumps into you or tries to distract you—this may be a tactic used by thieves.
  • In crowded areas — Keep your belongings in sight at all times and never leave bags unattended, even briefly.
  • Limit valuables — Only carry what you need for the day and leave unnecessary items at home.
  • Trust your instincts — If a situation feels off or someone is acting suspiciously, remove yourself from the area and alert authorities if necessary.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of pickpocketing in Tredyffrin Township, or notices suspicious activity, should contact the Tredyffrin Township Police Department at 610-644-3221.

In the event of an emergency, call 911.
