Eagles Grounded Again by Quakers

Barrington struggles to catch up after a surge by Moses Brown in the second half of the girls' lacrosse state championship.

Using a two-goal flourish in the final 30 seconds of the first half to knot the score 6-6, the Barrington High School Eagles looked to be in good shape heading into the second half of the Division I girls’ lacrosse title game.

Moses Brown had other ideas. The top seed rallied, scoring the first six goals of the second half and holding off a late Barrington run to secure the title, 14-10, at Rhode Island College. It was the third win of the year by Moses Brown over the Eagles -- the first two by one goal margins.St

After the six-goal flourish by the Quakers, the Eagles got as close as 13-9 in the second half. Mary Coogan scored her third goal with 7:01 remaining, and it gave Barrington a puncher’s chance in the final seven minutes.

However, a Barrington goal with 6:30 remaining was waived off because of a crease violation. Meghan Buonanno scored for the Quakers with 5:05 left to give them a five-goal cushion, and Barrington could only manage one more goal. The Eagles were limited to a single scoring opportunity in the game’s final 4:40, as the Quakers played keepaway.

Barrington had plenty of opportunities to control the game in the first half, but Moses Brown goalkeeper Jamie Marshall resembled a brick wall more than an actual human being. The sophomore earned the most valuable player award following the game, and had a slew of saves in both halves.

The loss thwarts a chance at a third straight state championship for Barrington – the Eagles won in 2010 and 2011, and were the runner-up in 2009. Barrington also won a title every year from 2001 to 2007. The Eagles have played in every title game since the Rhode Island Interscholastic League has run girls’ lacrosse, from 2001 to 2012.

Moses Brown earned its second girls’ lacrosse title with the win. The Quakers earned their first in 2008, beating Barrington.

Weather Conditions A Factor

Helping and hindering both teams at various points were the weather conditions. The game started out hot, with a blazing sun in the sky, but by the end of the first half ominous storm clouds had moved in.

The rain finally struck in the second half, and immediately drenched both teams. The slick field conditions made defense a bit more interesting for both teams, and penalties also increased as a result.
