Cause Of Sunday Night Fire Undetermined

The deputy chief said Tuesday the evidence was insufficient to give a definite cause.

CRANSTON, RI—Crews put out a fire on Mockingbird Drive on Monday night. Deputy Chief Stephen MacIntosh said the first alarm came at 8:30. Three engines, two ladder trucks, a rescue, a special hazards truck, and the deputy chief were among the responders. He estimated the fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes. No one was home when the fire broke out, he said, and no firefighters were injured during the incident. He is not aware any pets were in the house, either, he said.

Most of the damage happened to a portion of the front of the house, he said. Officially, he added, the cause of the fire is "undetermined" because there's insufficient evidence left to say definitively how it happened. But it appears to have started in the basement.

Initially, he added, firefighters also were dealing with a report someone was inside the burning house. However, that report was unfounded, he said.
