Cranston Man Arrested with Loaded Handgun in Car after Providence Shooting

Cranston police said they arrested a 33-year-old Cranston man driving a car matching the description of one shots were fired from Tuesday.

CRANSTON, RI—A man believed to be involved in a shooting in Providence was arrested with a loaded handgun by Cranston police after a traffic stop on Tuesday night.

Cranston Police Chief Col. Michael J. Winquist said that his department got a broadcast from the Providence Police Department about a car that fled the scene of a shooting on Comstock Parkway at around 5:26 p.m.

Shots were reportedly fired from the car.

About two hours later, Cranston officers saw a car matching the description on Carlton Street. They stopped the vehicle and inside was Gregory Garmon, 33, of 39 Carlton St., Cranston, who was arrested without incident.

A search of the car led to the seizure of a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun, ammunition and a small quantity of marijuana.

Garmon was held overnight for arraignment and was due to be arraigned in Third Division District Court in Warwick on Wednesday.

He was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence.

Bail was set at $15,000 with surety and Garmon is due to return to court on July 8.

He was released later on Wednesday after posting bail.

Court records show Garmon has several prior convictions including a 2003 conviction for felony assault and carrying a firearm while committing a violent crime. He was also convicted of forgery and counterfeiting in 2003 and 2002.
