Driver Unhurt in Rollover, Property Owner Wants Guardrail

A Wilbur Avenue resident wants a guardrail after many crashes over the years. This one was the worst in terms of property damage, she said.

The driver of a car that crashed through a wooden fence and rolled over a stone wall by the intersection of Wilbur and Natick Avenues on Sunday was not seriously hurt, according to Cranston police.

The car was wrecked along with two fences -- the white fence along the side of Natick Road and a second wood zigzag fence in a backyard garden. And for the property owners now looking at some fence repairs, it’s not the first time someone has crashed there, though this caused the most damage in recent memory.

Sandra Landry, as she stood in in a chilly November rain while Cranston firefighters treated the driver, said that she would like to see the city put a guardrail on Natick Avenue along her property line.

Landry said there are accidents on a regular basis, especially in the winter. Many are caused by people taking turns in the intersection too fast as the traffic lights turn yellow. Her inquiries about a possible guardrail led to her being told to request police reports and document the numerous crashes over the years.

The primary concern is that the severity of the crashes increase when cars go over the top of the wall, which stands about four feet.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash and the road surface was wet. The driver was cited for speeding and not having proof of insurance.
