Obituary: Angelos Maintanis, 92, WWII Veteran

Angelos Maintanis, 92, of Cranston, passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 18, 2015.

Angelos Maintanis, 92, of Cranston, passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 18, 2015. Born in Grafton, MA, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Sigalos) Maintanis.

He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 4, 1942 serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and honorably discharged as a Corporal on November 23, 1945. He was very proud to be a Marine and Brother. After the war, he played baseball for a local farm team in MA.

Angelos later met and married the love of his life, the late Despina “Pat” Dounetos in 1949 to whom he was married for 64 years. Together they co-founded the May Engineering Company in 1950.

Angelos was proud to be American and very proud of his Greek heritage and culture. A lifelong member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Cranston, he served on the Parish Council both as an officer and member and numerous committees from Stewardship to building and expansion programs, as well as being an active member of AHEPA for over 65 years again serving in many official capacities and LOGOS since its inception. He had received many awards from the Diocese of Boston for his dedication and devotion, including the high honor of Archon.

He is survived by his loving children, Marie White and her husband Kenneth, James Maintanis and his wife Linda, John Maintanis and his wife Lillian, and the late Joseph Maintanis. He was “Papou” to eight grandchildren and the dear brother of Stephen “Ted” Maintanis and the late Peter, Melia, Ricky, Paul, Nicholas, Christine, Bertha and Charles.

Known too many as Mr. May, he was loved and respected and will be greatly missed-Semper Fi.

Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Monday at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Cranston at 10 am. Burial will be at North Burial Ground, Providence. VISITING HOURS are Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
