Rhode Island Reports 630 Coronavirus Cases, A Single Day Record

RHODE ISLAND — Rhode Island reported 630 new coronavirus cases Friday, the second consecutive day with a new record number of cases. The state reported two deaths.

With the 566 cases reported Thursday, the state has now reported 36,380 total positives since the virus arrived in the region in March. There have been 1,224 deaths.

Gov. Gina Raimondo announced seven new regulations this week to help slow the spread of second wave of the virus. The new rules go into effect Sunday and will last two weeks. They include a curfew and restrictions on business capacity and gathering sizes.

"I'm confident that these targeted interventions will make a difference," Raimondo said. "The more people comply, the less we have to do."

The statewide positive test rate was 3.8 percent, more than double the level a month ago. The state currently has 187 people hospitalized with the virus.

Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, said Thursday that the problem remains clear: Rhode Islanders are socializing more than they should, and not doing so safely.

"Too many people are a part of too many groups," Alexander-Scott said, which allows for the "invisible spread" of the virus amid those who are asymptomatic.
