RI State Police Cruiser Crashes Into Another Cruiser On I-95 After Breakdown On I-95: RISP

Both RI state trooper cruisers were responding to a disabled vehicle in the fast lane on Interstate 95 southbound before Wednesday's crash.

PROVIDENCE, RI — New details surrounding Wednesday's crash between two Rhode Island State Police cruisers on Interstate 95 in Providence were released Tuesday.

Around 10:10 p.m., state troopers from the Lincoln Woods barracks were called to I-95 southbound near the Broad Street overpass for a report of a disabled vehicle. State police said the vehicle was stranded in the fast lane.

State police said a trooper was unable to move the vehicle and was forced to block the fast lane with his cruiser.

Then, a second cruiser responding to the scene struck the rear end of the stationary cruise and then the barrier in the center median, state police said. The crash pushed the stationary cruiser into the disabled vehicle, causing minor damage, state police said.

Both state troopers involved were taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with complaints of pain and were later released.

State police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
