Driver Drank Before Crash That Kills East Greenwich Teen: Police
Aramis Segura, 30, was arraigned Tuesday and charged in connection to the death of Olivia Passaretti, 17, of East Greenwich.
EAST GREENWICH, RI — A Charlestown man accused of causing a crash that killed an East Greenwich teen girl admitted to police he drank alcohol and smoked marijuana before the crash, according to Rhode Island State Police.
Aramis Segura, 30, was arraigned Tuesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, driving to endanger resulting in death, obstruction of justice, and operating on a suspended license, WPRI 12 reported.
The crash happened around 1 a.m., New Year's Day on Interstate 95 South, near the Route 117 overpass. According to police, a Mercedes sedan, driven by Segura, was going fast in the left lane, when the vehicle swerved across the third lane, and into the second. The car then rear-ended a Nissan Altima in the second lane, pushing it off the road and into the grassy shoulder next to the highway. The car rolled down the embankment, hitting a tree and rolling over onto the roof.

The driver of the Nissan, Olivia Passaretti, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene, Rhode Island State Police said.
The crash spun Segura's Mercedes into the breakdown lane. He then got out of the car and ran away, police said. He was later arrested at his Charlestown home.

Segura's bail was originally set at $10,000, but was increased to $250,000 with surety, after a request from Rhode Island State Police. He was taken to the Adult Correctional Institution and held for breaking probation on a previous breaking and entering charge, officials said.
