East Greenwich Woman Drowns At Conimicut Point Beach In Warwick

Two friends went night swimming at Conimicut Point Beach, but a 28-year-old woman never resurfaced after getting in the water on Thursday.

WARWICK, RI — An East Greenwich woman died Thursday after drowning at Conimicut Point Beach, according to Warwick police.

Around 9:48 p.m., police and fire officials were called to the beach for a report of a missing swimmer.

Police said Nicolette Biber, 28, and a 40-year-old man went to the beach to go night swimming. While the man was setting up a beach blanket near where the sand bar begins, Biber got in the water. But a short time later, Biber went under and did not resurface, police said.

Boat units from the Warwick Police Department, Warwick Fire Department, and Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force, along with air support from the U. S. Coast Guard, responded, and after searching for about 20 minutes, they found Biber on the north side of the sand bar close to the lighthouse. Emergency crews attempted to revive Biber and rushed her to Kent Hospital in Warwick, but she was pronounced dead there, police said.

"Our deepest condolences are with the family of Nicolette," Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor said. "We cannot overstate the dangers of swimming at night, in the dark, and in unfamiliar areas where tides and high winds may make conditions unpredictable."
