EAST GREENWICH, RI — The remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the Northeast hard overnight, dropping several inches of rain on Rhode Island. Roads were closed across the state Thursday morning due to flooding, though power outages were scattered.

The University of Rhode Island in Kingston saw the highest rain totals in the state, clocking in at 9.83 inches. Meanwhile, most of Kent County saw over 4 inches of rain, with Greene getting more than 5 inches.

That's more than the 3.92 inches of rain the Providence-area usually sees in the entire month of September, according to the National Weather Service. Another way to look at it: The National Severe Storms Laboratory estimated that one inch of rain is equal to about 13 inches of snowfall. Had temperatures been about 50 degrees cooler, parts of the state would have been buried under about 10 feet of snow, or more than three times the accumulation of the Blizzard of '78.
