RI Republican Primary Results: Donald Trump Declared Winner

One day after a big rally in Warwick, Donald Trump is poised to cruise to victory over John Kasich and Ted Cruz.

RHODE ISLAND—Donald Trump is projected to win the Rhode Island presidential primary after early results in Tuesday's Presidential Preference Primary showed him with a commanding advantage over John Kasich and Ted Cruz.

Trump was the presumptive winner heading into Tuesday's primary and early results showed him with a lead of about 65 percent with less than 10 percent of precincts reporting. CBS News first made the call, followed by every other national news outlet in short order. Less than an hour after polls closed at 8 p.m, he held about 65 percent of the vote in Rhode Island.

At a results watching party at Chapel Grille in Cranston, state Trump campaign honorary chairman Joe Trillo said that Trump's victory beat even his expectations.

Trillo said that he expected Trump to get more than 50 percent of the vote.

"What's coming out right now is just unbelievable," he said in an interview. "It's a tremendous statement what this team has done, it has motivated people to come out. People are sick and tired of business as usual, of politicians making promises they don't keep."

Trillo said that Trump's populist appeal rang true with Rhode Island voters.

"He understands the problems, can bring this country around and knows how to solve them," Trillo said.

Trump is expected to make comments shortly.

From Monday: Donald Trump is the frontrunner in the run-up to Tuesday's Republican presidential preference primary, bolstered by a rally at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Monday that drew thousands.

Polls open at 7 a.m. except for a few locations that open two hours later.

Trump's visit Monday came on the heels of a Brown University poll released Sunday that shows him with a commanding lead over John Kasich.

The Trump rally fit the mold of other rallies across the country with several protesters being escorted out, supporters shouting "build that wall" and the candidate delivering a speech that veered between populism and pot-shots.

Trump criticized Kasich for conducting interviews while eating pancakes, saying "I never saw a guy eat like this."

He also blasted Obamacare, trade policies like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the decline of American manufacturing, Ted Cruz's demand for additional debates and Syrian refugees, which he said would not be welcome in Rhode Island if he were President.

"We don't know where they're from," he said.
