Two EGHS Students Named Presidential Scholars
Grace Miner and Xiaoyi (Julian) Wu are the only two Presidential Scholars named in Rhode Island. Just 160 were selected nationwide.
EAST GREENWICH, RI—Two students at East Greenwich High School have been named United States Presidential Scholars, one of the most illustrious awards a high school student can get.
The impressive accomplishment for Seniors Grace Miner and Xiaoyi (Julian) Wu is all the more remarkable when the total number of presidential scholars across the country is considered. Just 160 were selected this year and the two East Greenwich students are the only two named in Rhode Island.
"We are ecstatic for Grace and Julian, their families and friends, as well as the many educators who have had the pleasure of teaching these two students during their tenure at East Greenwich High School," said Principal Michael Podraza in a post on the EGHS Success blog.

This year marks the 52nd class of U.S. Presidential Scholars recognized for achievement in academics, the arts and technical education.
"This year's class of Presidential Scholars continues a more than 50 year trend of honoring students who've shown excellence in their educational, artistic and civic pursuits," said U.S. Secretary of Education John King. "Thirty years ago, the program was expanded to include students in the arts, which is critical to providing students with a well-rounded education. Now, we've added 20 more slots to honor our highest achieving students in career and technical education, reflecting the Department's belief that a quality education must be a well-rounded education that prepares students for college, careers and any other civic service."
