East Providence Detective Continues To Battle Illness

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — Jose Taveira, detective with East Providence police, is very ill and is courageously battling an illness, according to the Police Department. A golf tournament to benefit him and his family will be held this Tuesday.

"The East Providence Police Department is asking our friends, family and the community to please keep Det. Jose Taveira and his family in their thoughts and prayers," police said in a statement.

Taveira has been with East Providence police for more than 20 years. During that time, he has established himself as an expert in financial crimes, taking pride in getting justice for those victimized by fraud, particularly the elderly, according to the East Providence police. He was most proud when he was able to recover funds for those victims, police say.

As he continues to battle the illness, his daughter and his longtime fiance have been by his side, according to the police. A golf tournament, the proceeds of which will benefit him and his family members, is scheduled for Tuesday at Agawam Hunt, located on Roger Williams Avenue.
