Warning Period Over, East Providence Red Light Cameras Go Live

East Providence police will now issue fines $85 fines for those who go through red lights at two of the city's most dangerous intersections.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — Red light cameras were installed at two of East Providence's most dangerous intersections, and warnings have been issued for people running them since last month. But on Wednesday, the warning period ended.

East Providence police will now issue fines $85 fines for drivers who go through red lights at the Broadway at Grosvenor Avenue and the North Broadway at Roger Williams Avenue intersections.

By adding this program, East Providence is joining over 50o cities in the United States who have some form of public safety traffic cameras, including red light, school speed, or both. East Providence police said the program is part of an effort to reduce crashes at some of the city's most dangerous intersections.

According to police, failing to stop at red lights and speed was likely a factor in more than 45 percent of all traffic fatalities in Rhode Island.

The contractor for the program, Sensys Gatso, covered the costs associated with the equipment, camera installation, and signage. The East Providence Police Department will be responsible for determining whether to issue a violation, and drivers will retain the right to appeal violations through the judicial process.
