Toddler Exposed To Cocaine And Fentanyl At Motel, Couple Arrested: Cops

The living conditions at a Glocester motel "seriously endangered the physical health and welfare of the child," police said.

GLOCESTER, RI — A toddler was exposed to cocaine and fentanyl in a Glocester motel room where the "living conditions seriously endangered the physical health and welfare of the child," police said.

The 18-month-old was "taken into protective custody and evaluated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where toxicology testing confirmed the presence of cocaine and fentanyl exposure," the Glocester police said in a media release, and arrest warrants were obtained for a man and woman, Danielle Bennett, 41, and Jose Lopez, also 41.

Bennett and Lopez were arrested on charges of child endangerment.

Police first learned of the endangered child when officers were called to the West Glocester Motor Inn Sept. 2 for a "landlord-tenant issue involving an adult female resident," according to the release.

"During the course of this investigation, management at the Motor Inn later contacted police after discovering suspected narcotics and drug activity inside the vacant room," the release said.

"Evidence at the scene indicated that an 18-month-old child had been living in the room where drug activity was observed and documented," the release said. "Officers observed children’s clothing, toys, and other personal belongings throughout the area."

A Department of Children, Youth, and Families Investigation led to the location of the child and guardian in Woonsocket, according to the release, and the toddler was taken into protective custody.

Warrants were then obtained for the arrests of Bennett and Lopez, police said.

The couple, "whose last known address was in Woonsocket, have extensive prior contacts with law enforcement, including drug-related offenses," according to the release.

Bennett and Lopez were arrested Saturday, police said.

They were arraigned Monday and released on their own recognizance, according to the release.
