Latest RI Forecast: Flash Flood Watch Friday

The watch is in effect for Rhode Island from 8 a.m. Friday through 5 p.m.

JOHNSTON, RI — The National Weather Service at 10:02 p.m. Thursday issued a flood watch for Rhode Island. The watch is in effect from 8 a.m. Friday until 5 p.m., according to the office in Taunton, Mass. It means people should be aware "there is the potential for a period of torrential rain and localized urban flash flooding tomorrow morning across Rhode Island and Southeast MA," the weather service said. "The greatest risk for this will occur near the south coast, where localized rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be possible."

But there is some uncertainty about the forecast. The worst of the rainfall might stay south of the region and not reach Rhode Island. "However, the threat was high enough to warrant a Flash Flood Watch," the National Weather Service said.
