Newport Creamery Goes Dark; New Gas Station on the Way
The Johnston Planning Board gave its approval for the gas station plan almost a year ago.

A longtime fixture in Johnston, the located at 1410 Atwood Ave. closed its doors last week, and in its place will soon be a new Stop & Shop gas station.
Kelly Coates, Senior Vice President at Carpionato Properties, said during a phone interview that demolition and parking lot work should start at the site "within the next two weeks, and the whole project will be done for some time in last summer or early fall."
On Tuesday morning, the former restaurant sat vacant, with a sign on the doors notifying customers that it would closed as of June 30. All of the signage at the front of the property had been removed.

Coates said the developer has been going through "the final, last round of putting the funding together and getting everything done."
According to the application filed with the Johnston Planning Board last year for the $1.5 million project, the facility will have five stations, each with two pumps.

At the time, Coates told the board that allowing the gas station β which would only be for fueling vehicles, like a similar facility in Cranston β would ensure that the remained in the plaza.
