The Intersection Time Magazine Called RI's Worst

The magazine analyzed data from 2003 to 2012 to zero in on the most dangerous intersection in every state.

PROVIDENCE, RI—Rhode Island's contribution to the nation's most dangerous intersections is actually an exit on the highway. Specifically, it's Exit 20 on Interstate 95, which is the connection to Route 6 in Downtown Providence. The study, which Time Magazine produced (and a Chicago law firm recreated with a map) tags the worst intersections in all 50 states. The data for Rhode Island didn't specify Exit 20 North or South, so perhaps caution is advisable in both directions.

The most perilous intersection in the whole country is Bensalem, Pa., which is 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia.

The distinction was based on National Highway Travel Safety Administration numbers showing fatal accidents within 150 feet of each other.

The study also noted Rhode Island's comparatively low number of traffic fatalities, which might reflect "inclement weather," keeping drivers off the road. Of course, the study only includes data through 2012. Rhode Island's traffic fatalities soared this year by 50 percent. Sadly, two people died in crashes over the past holiday weekend.
