Traffic on Atwood Avenue Slowed by Road Repairs

The final road repairs were being done today to the area affected by last year's water main break.

Cars traveling on Atwood Avenue crawled by this morning, slowed by the final phase of work to repair the area affected by .

James Hathaway, vice president of Piccoli Paving, explained that his company is replacing the asphalt applied to the road last year.

"We're doing the final restoration of the road surface [since] what they did here was temporary," Hathaway said as a backhoe smoothed out the gravel and sand bed, and workers lowered new curbs into place.

The crew started Monday with the southbound lane (heading toward the Rt. 6 interchange), and were working on the northbound lane before putting a binder in place overnight. The final layer of asphalt is scheduled to be applied tomorrow, Hathaway explained.

Last August, a total of three water valves broke, with two smaller vavles breaking after crews repaired the first one.

Several local businesses β€” including β€” were left without water service as Providence Water workers dug trenches in Atwood Avenue and replaced the broken parts.
