What's Open, Closed In RI On Columbus Day?

Many banks are closed, even though the stock market is open. But lots of people will be working.

JOHNSTON, RI—Monday, October 9 is Columbus Day. Columbus Day became a national holiday in 1937, under President Roosevelt. The day had been celebrated for centuries before, though, mainly in the form of religious celebration or parades honoring both Italian Heritage and Christopher Columbus.

Originally Columbus Day was observed every October 12, the date Columbus discovered the New World. In 1971 it was changed to the second Monday in October. Columbus Day is considered a federal holiday, but it's not typically a holiday most get off work for

RIPTA: RIPTA buses will operate on a Sunday/ holiday schedule.
