5 THINGS: Lunar Pictures, Magical Music and Libraries

There are plenty of activities for a Thursday! Catch the fun times!

Here are the (more than) Five Things for Thursday, August 23, 2012:

Scallops – not just dinner anymore. There is a on a New England coastal cookbook at 1 p.m. at the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library in Narragansett. (Speaking of the library, there is also at 6 p.m., which sounds awesome.) Both events are free.

The business of government business. The Narragansett Zoning Board of Review meets at 7 p.m. The South Kingstown Affordable Housing Collaborative Committee meets at 7 p.m. You can only go to one, so choose wisely.

Jump, jive and wail. The South County Commons continues at 6 p.m. today – the show is free! Looking for something a bit more swank? For $10 to $35, there is at the Towers at 7 p.m. (Or if you’re feeling ambitious, hit them both up! I mean, it’s only a 10 minute drive at most from one to the other, don’t be so Rhode Island.)

How to watch a show with minimal monetary expenditure. Showings of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying start today at Theatre By The Sea. For more info, click . Most tickets are in the $35 range.

A gallery benefit show! There is a gallery show of Stephanie Parker’s work to benefit the Courthouse Center for the Arts. The exhibit is on display until Sept. 9, and open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON! Starting in early September, we’re going to be phasing out the adding of new calendar events by our staff. This means that if you’re from a group or organization, you’ll have to start doing them yourself. It’s pretty simple, though! While logged into your Patch account, just go here. Adding your event ensures it’ll show up in searches, and be eligible for me to give it shout-outs in Five Things.

Sign up for our daily newsletter! Hey, I realize we have a lot of neat features and knick-knacks on the site, so it can be confusing to keep up with it all. Want just one simple, easy to read daily digest? Sign up for our e-mail newsletter here then. It comes out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. roughly, every single day of the week. Amazing, I know!

A bit more advanced than a Polaroid, probably. On this day in 1966, the Lunar Orbiter 1 took the first photograph of Earth from the Moon.

No happy. It’s Kobe Bryant’s 34th birthday today. I wish him no happiness. Hey Kobe, go spit!
