Here are the (more than) Five Things for Saturday, September 15, 2012:

Sales, markets and other places to spend money. That lucre burning a hole in your pocket? Get rid of it at these places then:

• The General Stanton Inn is every Saturday in Charlestown, opening at 8 a.m.
• The PEO to benefit its scholarship fund is at 8 a.m. at Peace Dale Congregational Church.
• The South Kingstown and URI is at 8:30 a.m.
• The Cross Mills’ is at 9 a.m. in Charlestown.

Work on your backhand, your serve, your smashing at the net… There is at the courts at Broad Rock Middle School starting at 9 a.m. The cost is just $3.

It’s all about the cookies (not really). If you have a child interested in becoming a girl scout, congrats! start at 9 a.m. at the Narragansett Community Center on Mumford Road.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON! Starting this week, we’re going to be phasing out the adding of new calendar events by our staff. This means that if you’re from a group or organization, you’ll have to start doing them yourself. It’s pretty simple, though! While logged into your Patch account, just go here. Adding your event ensures it’ll show up in searches, and be eligible for me to give it shout-outs in Five Things.

A good day for the John Bull. On this day in 1831, the John Bull locomotive operated for the first time. Also on this day, but in 1981, the John Bull became the oldest operating locomotive, as the Smithsonian took it for a spin on its 150^th birthday.

I’m sure he’d be happy with that whole pool game as well. Today is the birthday of Marco Polo. Please celebrate in your pool. (Note: The ocean is a poor place to play.)
