Block Party in Peace Dale Saturday

A community block party will be held Saturday night in Peace Dale.

The Peace Dale Community Block Party, sponsored by the Peace Dale Neighborhood Revitalization, Inc. and the Town of South Kingstown, will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Peace Dale Village Public parking lot on Kingstown Road between Sweetcakes and Tase-Rite.

Music will be provided by local bands Shacklehands and Saddle up the Chicken.

Shacklehands, an American alternative country and rock band formed in 2006, plays music influenced by such bands and artists as The Flying Burrito Brothers, Johnny Cash, Uncle Tupelo, The Bottle Rockets, The Jayhawks, and Buck Owens.  Band members include Gregg Figliozzi, Amy Figliozzi, Jon Cass, Paul Dressel, and Steve Vendettuoli.

Saddle up the Chicken, comprised of local musicians George Connors, Lutz Hamel, Jack MacDonald, Maria Meleschnig, Don Minto, John O’Malley, and Jeff Taber, plays a mix of bluegrass, gospel, country, and Appalachian favorites.

According to the band’s website, its name comes from days when they were practicing in a barn at a farm and every time they played, when they first started out, there was this one chicken who would sit on a saddle in the corner and bob its head in time with the music...the first fan, and the rest is now folklore immortalized in the band’s name.
