DNA Evidence Leads South Kingstown Detective To Alleged Car Thief
Police turned DNA evidence over to the state health department, and on Friday, officers made an arrest.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI—A year and seven months after a car was stolen from a resident's driveway, South Kingstown police charged the alleged car thief. Joseph D. Young, 31, of South Kingstown, is being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston for probation violations. On Friday he was booked for felony Larceny over $1, 500 (Auto Theft). Police said DNA evidence helped collar him.
According to police Det. Sgt. Trevor Richmond, the car, which was stolen Oct. 15, 2016, was later found, and returned to the owner. Detectives, however, also went over the car for evidence and took DNA samples. The DNA was sent to the state health department. In April, the health department found the DNA matched a convicted felon. Police then obtained an arrest warrant for Young.
