Narragansett Police Log: August 31, 2012

A Narragansett man is charged with domestic assault after police see him shove a relative.

Narragansett Man Charged With Domestic Offenses

Andrew T. Steele, 27, of 40 Hemlock Ave., Narragansett, was arrested at about 8:02 p.m. on Aug. 31 and charged with domestic assault and domestic disorderly conduct.

According to police, they received a report of a man jumping out of a moving van and then yelling at massing cars on Sand Hill Cove Road.

Police said that based on the description of the man, the address of the incident and past arrests of Steele, they believed that he was the person yelling. They responded to his residence, and heard him arguing with a family member from outside.

According to police, after knocking on the door, Steele said, “Go ahead dad, shoot me in the head!” Police then opened a storm door to gain entrance, at which point they observed Steele shove a family member from behind, to the ground.

Police arrested Steele without incident. They noted that he was crying hysterically and appeared to be highly intoxicated. The family member didn’t want to provide police with a written statement, but told them he and Steele had been drinking at Buster Crab’s, and then argued during the van ride home.

According to police, Steele is the registered owner of a handgun. As a condition of his bail, he agreed to surrender the gun, which police confiscated. He was formally released at about 10:43 p.m.

Newport Man Cited for License Violation

Douglas R. Ernest, 49, of 10 Hall Ave., Newport, was cited at about 1:50 a.m. on Aug. 31 and charged with driving with a suspended license.

According to police, an officer driving on Point Judith Road near Foddering Farm Road heard a green Ford Explorer with a loud exhaust. A traffic stop was made near Jerry’s Paint and Hardware.

Police said a background check revealed that the driver – Ernest – had a suspended license. His license was suspended on May 18 for failing to appear at a court hearing.

Ernest was cited and released. A friend arrived and drove the car from the scene.

Narragansett Woman Cited for License Violation

Caitlin Dugan, 24, of 26 Courtland Drive, Narragansett, was cited at about 12:17 a.m. on Aug. 31 and charged with driving with a suspended license.

According to police, an officer driving on Boston Neck Road saw a red Nissan traveling with a defective brake light. A traffic stop was made on Bridgetown Road near Lakeside Drive.

Police said that a background check of the driver – Dugan – revealed that her license was suspended. She was cited for the violation, and given a ride to her home.
