Narragansett Sports Roundup: Volunteers Needed for Pier Hoops Tourney; Boys' Soccer Plays Tonight

The Pier School Athletic Boosters Club needs volunteers for their annual basketball tournament, the boys' soccer team plays at 6 p.m. at Westerly, and a look at the local sports schedule for the upcoming week.

Boosters Want You To Volunteer

The Narragansett Pier School Athletic Boosters Club is looking for people to help with ticket and concession sales for the 12th annual Pier Middle School Preseason Basketball Tournament, which will be held at the middle and high schools Friday, Nov. 19 and Saturday, Nov. 20.

Sue Tierney, a member of the boosters club, said the tournament serves as the primary fundraiser for the club's programs. Admission for each day is $3, or $5 for a weekend pass.

"This is how we help pay for equipment and uniforms," Tierney said.

The school has just finished hiring a new athletic director, long-time local coach, volunteer and parent Michael Millen. As a result, Tierney said they basically had about two weeks to plan the entire thing.

While the 12-team field has yet to be announced, Tierney said the schedule for the games is already in place. On Friday night, from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., the boys will play at Narragansett High School, while the girls play at the middle school. The next day, the boys and the girls take turns at the Pier School, playing from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The winners of the double-elimination tournament get T-shirts, and Tierney said the crowd size is typically good.

"There's roughly 15 kids on each team, so there's roughly 30 kids on the floor at all times, so the spectators are double that," she said of each game.

The Narragansett High boys' soccer team will attempt to win its fifth game in a row and keep its season alive at Westerly today. Although Washington County is a small, compressed area, the two teams know each other even better than most.

The winner of Saturday's game will move on to face Smithfield (16-2, 14-2 Division II-North) at East Greenwich High School 6 p.m. Tuesday. A full bracket can be seen here.
