NARRAGANSETT, RI — Nathan Carman was in Probate Court on Monday in New Hampshire for a status hearing about the "slayer case" his aunts have brought against him. The aunts, daughters of the murdered real estate developer John Chakalos, are seeking to stop him from inheriting money from his grandfather, specifically the share his mother would have received. His mother Linda is presumed lost at sea after a fishing trip she took with her son in 2016. Their boat sank, and she disappeared. His grandfather's murder in 2013 has never been solved. Carman was called a suspect in the case but was never charged.
Carman was representing himself in court on Monday. He fired his lawyers earlier this year.
On Monday, he told the judge he has been unable to hire new attorneys because he hasn't been able to raise the finances to pay them. He has put his house on the market, but no one has made an offer. Carman also told the judge he has not moved forward with the "discovery" part of the pretrial because he is waiting for his aunts and their attorneys to present a case.

"I did not kill my grandfather," he told the judge.
Carman filed a motion to dismiss the case because, in his opinion, the New Hampshire court lacks jurisdiction. He claimed his grandfather used a New Hampshire address for tax purposes but was really a Connecticut resident. The judge has not yet ruled on that motion but told both sides the case is moving forward, whether Carman has a lawyer or not.
