Pier Middle School Basketball Tournament: Day Two Live Results

Patch is here live for the second day of the 14th annual tournament.

4:15 p.m. – The girls' championship game is set, as Narragansett will play Coventry again at 5 p.m. after beating Curtis Corner 27-20.

The Mariners held the lead throughout the game, but couldn't put away Curtis Corner. Narragansett looked visibly fatigued playing just two hours after an exhausting loss to Coventry.

Chelsea Sahagian led the Mariners with 16 points, with Abby McKanna chipping in 10. Carly Timpson hit a free throw.

For Curtis Corner, Emma Pelton led the way with six points. Taylor Lynch and Britney Laraway each had four, and Annie Madden, Jackie Karpowicz and Kate Marcellino each had a basket.

In the boys' bracket, Narragansett built up a big lead against Curtis Corner and held on for a 34-32 win.

At halftime, the Mariners led 24-10. They played their second unit for most of the second half, which allowed Curtis Corner back into the game. The starters came back in for the final five minutes and regained the lead.

For Narragansett, Tyrell Smith led all scorers with 11 points. Chris DiClemente scored seven points, six in the opening five minutes of the game. Jack Clancey (5), Deontae Stanley (4), Tyler Gershkoff (3), William Doyle (2) and Nate Rione (2) scored for the Mariners.

For Curtis Corner, Kyle Favreau overpowered smaller defenders in the second half, scoring 12 of his 16 points then. Sam Cary (8), Isaiah Duarte (3), Mike Gross (2), T.J. Vanasse (2) and Kyle Iemma (1) also scored.

The final for the boys is shaping up as a repeat of the opening round game – Monsignor Clarke vs. Narragansett. Monsignor Clarke is in after blowing out Coventry 46-20. And it looks like Narragansett will emerge from the loser's bracket, as they have a 26-11 lead on Coventry at the half.

Taking that into account, this will be the last update for now, until the conclusion of the tournament. At that point, we will have a wrap-up on the championship games and the complete bracket. Thanks for following along today!

1:15 p.m. – The Narragansett girls ran into a tough Coventry team and dropped their first game of the tournament, 40-33.

The Mariners stayed in the game thanks to a herculean effort from Abby McKanna. The eighth grader finished with 21 points, 15 in the first half. Chelsea Sahagian scored seven for Narragansett, and Carly Timpson chipped in three.

For Coventry, Ayssa Derrick had nine, and Kaitlin Matera scored eight. The win puts Coventry in the championship game at 5 p.m.

Narragansett continues to play in the loser's bracket, and will face Curtis Corner at 3 p.m.

Curtis Corner survived against Gaudet 24-22, despite the best efforts of Maddi Lyman. The guard had 15 of Gaudet's points, including a Reggie Miller-like nine in the final two minutes. The loss eliminated Gaudet from the tournament.

In the boys' bracket, Curtis Corner held on for another win, beating Burrillville 28-23. Seth Mace scored seven points, while Mike Gross had six. Isaiah Duarte (4), Kyle Favreau (3), Nolan Carney (2), Jack Vacarro (2), T.J. Vanasse (2) and Sam Cary (2) rounded out the scoring for Curtis Corner.

Curtis Corner will play Narragansett at 2 p.m. The loser of the current game – Monsignor Clarke vs. Coventry – will play the winner of Narragansett-Curtis Corner at 4 p.m. The winner of the current game will face the loser's bracket winner in the initial game of the championship at 6 p.m.

10:37 a.m. – The Narragansett Pier Middle School's boys' basketball team is still alive in this year's tournament, as they easily overpowered Gaudet 46-28.

Chris DiClemente led the way for the Mariners with 18 points. Tyrell Smith had seven points, and Joe Sekator had four.

In the opening game today at 8 a.m., the Burrillville Broncos won, setting up the match-up taking place on the court right now against Curtis Corner. Curtis Corner leads 14-10 at halftime. The winner will play Narragansett at 2 p.m.
