Supplemental Gansett Police Reports: September 24 to 29, 2012

Police arrest a Pawtucket man for crank phone calls, and a South Kingstown man for another warrant.

These reports were procured via records requests. The arrests were not included in the originally printed media packet, either because of ongoing investigations, vacations for commanding officers or mistakenly by oversight.

Pawtucket Man Charged With Making Obscene Phone Calls

Manuel E. Vargas, 50, of 302 Walcott St., Pawtucket, was arrested at about 11:24 a.m. on Sept. 24 and charged with making obscene phone calls.

According to police, on Aug. 2 they received a complaint from a Narragansett woman that Vargas had been making obscene phone calls to her for more than two years. She told police that Vargas was a disgruntled former employee of her fiancé.

Police said that the victim had saved voicemail messages from Vargas, where he insinuates that the victim performed group sex acts and other obscenities. A server from the victim’s workplace also lodged a complaint against Vargas after he allegedly harassed her as well.

According to police, they called Vargas, who said he only made the calls after being harassed by the victim and her fiancé. Police said a warrant would be issued for his arrest.

Police said Vargas turned himself in on Sept. 24. He was arrested without incident, processed and then transported to Fourth Division District Court for arraignment at about noon.

South Kingstown Man Arrested for Warrant

Gardner K. Gardiner, 25, of 81 North Road, South Kingstown, was arrested at about 11:50 p.m. on Sept. 29. Police said a Fourth Division District Court warrant was out for his arrest.

According to police, officers familiar with Gardiner from past arrests knew a warrant was issued for his arrest again on Sept. 21. Police said they went to his listed workplace, the Lighthouse Inn, and found his sleeping on a couch in the lobby.

Police said Gardiner was arrested without incident. He was transported to the ACI at 5:17 a.m.
