The End Is Near — for This Heat Wave

Friday and Saturday will be hot, but there's cooler weather on the way for Sunday.

Two more days of hot and humid weather are expected in Rhode Island, including Narragansett and South Kingstown, before cooler air moves into the region on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS issued an air quality alert, a heat advisory, and an excessive heat warning for Friday, forecasting high temperatures in the upper 90s and dew points in the lower 60s, resulting in a heat index of up to 103.

Friday could be the hottest day of the summer so far, with the potential to meet the record 100-degree temperature measured on July 19, 1977.

Narragansett's Cooling Center at the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library (35 Kingstown Rd.) will remain open until 5 p.m. on Friday and will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

South Kingstown's Cooling Center at the Neighborhood Guild (325 Columbia St.) will remain open until 9 p.m. Friday and Centers at the Peace Dale Library (1057 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale), Kingston Free Library (2605 Kingstown Rd., Kingston) and Hale Library (2601 Commodore Perry Hwy., Wakefield), will remain open until 5 p.m. On Saturday, the Peace Dale Library Cooling Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Kingston Free Library Center from 9 a.m. to noon.

Following this week's heat wave, a low-pressure system is expected to push its way through the area on Saturday night into Sunday, lowering humidity levels and dropping afternoon temps into the low 80s on Sunday.

Rain and thunderstorms are possible during the day on Friday, with a higher possibility of storms on Saturday into Sunday morning, raising the potential for local flooding, the NWS reported.

The recent stretch of hot weather is "very anomalous," according to NASA, which recently posted a satellite photo of the stubborn high-pressure center covering the eastern half of the United States.
