Woman Pleads in SK Check Forgery Case

Brittney Sumpter, 23, is ordered to repay funds stolen from a relative's checking account.

Brittney M. Sumpter, 23, now of 668 Park Ave., Cranston, and formerly of 130 Mettatuxet Road, Narragansett, pleaded no contest on Aug. 14 to two South Kingstown police felony charges of forgery.

Sumpter was ordered to pay $1,540.92 in restitution, and $450 in assessments and court fees. Any probation or jail time is deferred, assuming Sumpter makes payments and avoids future arrests In return for her plea, additional charges of forgery and obtaining money under false pretenses were dismissed.

According to South Kingstown police reports included in court files, in October 2011 Sumpter turned herself in after learning of warrants out for her arrest. At that time, she allegedly admitted to stealing checks from a family member to pay for heroin.

The forgery was first reported to police in September 2011, at which point Sumpter was allegedly identified cashing checks from video footage at the family member’s bank. Sumpter is allegedly on tape on three different dates.

On a fourth instance, Jason Leal, 27, homeless, is seen cashing a check. Sumpter admitted that she had Leal cash a check for her, and as a result, a forgery charge against Leal was dismissed.

According to online records, Sumpter has several previous arrests:

  • In another court proceeding on Aug. 14, Sumpter pleaded to two Warwick police charges of forgery. She was ordered to pay restitution.
  • In May, Sumpter pleaded no contest to a Cumberland police charge of receiving stolen goods valued at less than $1,500. She was ordered to serve a year of probation.
  • In November 2010, Sumpter pleaded no contest to a Narragansett police charge of driving with a suspended license. She was ordered to pay a fine.
  • In June 2009, Sumpter pleaded no contest to a Narragansett police charge of driving with a suspended license. She was ordered to pay court costs.
  • In September 2008, Sumpter pleaded no contest to a South Kingstown police charge of drunken driving. She was ordered to surrender her license for three months, to pay a fine, and to complete 25 hours of community service and DWI school.
  • In December 2006, a Charlestown police charge of driving with a suspended license against Sumpter was dismissed.
