Bowen's Wharf Tree Lighting Set, New Holiday Block Party Announced

Bowen's Wharf is starting the festivities earlier this year as it introduces the block party in advance of its 45th tree lighting Dec. 5.

Christmastime in Newport is officially in full swing when Bowen’s Wharf lights its tree every year.

This year, the 45th annual event will be held at 6 p.m. sharp on Dec. 5 when a 30-foot tree on the historic wharf is illuminated by lights and surrounded by carolers, Frosty the Snowman, Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Festivities that night actually begin at 4:30 p.m. with the arrival of Frosty followed by a sing-a-long at 5. Santa and Mrs. Claus tend to arrive on a boat shortly after the mayor flips the switch to light the tree.

This year, Bowen’s Wharf is kicking off the season a little earlier with what they’re calling a Holiday Block Party on Nov. 27, which happens to be Black Friday at big box stores but a whole lot less festive.

The wharf-wide yuletide deal-fest features free hot cider and live music accompanied by a boat parade on the water.

The party runs from 5 to 8 p.m. rain or snow. It’s a good chance to shop, dine, watch the waterfront and walk off turkey dinner from the prior Thanksgiving night. The stores will be adorned with festive displays and efforts will be made to infect all who come with the season’s cheer.

Two hours of validated parking are available from participating Bowen’s Wharf merchants all season, and there is free parking at designated locations throughout the city of Newport. Note: The Bowen’s Wharf parking lot will be open until 4 pm the day of the tree lighting.
