Middletown Man Charged In Newport Shooting

Newport police say they are still looking for information that can aid in the investigation of Friday morning's shooting.

NEWPORT, RI — A Middletown man was arrested Monday in connection to a shooting in Newport on Friday.

Johnny Escobar, 24, was charged with possession of firearms by certain persons prohibited, assault with intent to commit specified felonies, license or permit required for carrying a pistol, and firing in a compact area.

Police said the shooting happened around 12:53 a.m. in the area of Jade Way and Kennedy Road. Before officers arrived, the victim was taken to Newport Hospital by some friends. Police said the victim was later transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers later learned Escobar was involved in the shooting, police said. Police arrested him Monday on a warrant. Escobar is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Newport District Court.
