NEWPORT, RI — The bridge has re-opened for all vehicles, as of 11 p.m. Friday, the state said.
It reopened to passenger cars, first. Earlier, it was closed entirely. Before that, the westbound lanes of the Newport Pell Bridge were closed temporarily due to an accident. The Bridge and Turnpike Authority said a container truck spilled over.
Also, access was being restricted due to high winds. Panel body type trucks (when empty), tractor trailers, empty vans, house trailers, motor homes, high profile vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds could not use the bridge.
