Newport Gingerbread Lighthouse Still Biggest In New England

The lighthouse was made of 350 pounds of gingerbread made into 1,600 bricks, plus 2,400 pieces of candy and 20 gallons of royal icing

NEWPORT, RI — The chef and kitchen team at the Newport Marriott have outdone themselves again. Their gingerbread lighthouse is once again the biggest in New England. Plus, it's a working lighthouse. The project took about 100 hours for baking, building and decorating. It's 16 feet tall and is made of 350
pounds of gingerbread, more than 1,600 bricks, 2,400 pieces of candy and 20 gallons of royal icing.

The gingerbread lighthouse has been a Newport tradition for 17 years, according to Andrea McHugh, of Discover Newport. Everyone can see it in the lobby of the Newport Visitor Information Center, 23 America's Cup Ave. Hours are Saturdays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Fridays from 9 to 5. Except for Christmas Day, it's open every day until Jan. 1. There's no charge, but local food pantries are hoping people will being a non-perishable food item for Santa's sleigh.Free parking is available in the Visitor Center garage.
