NEWPORT, RI— So far, Newport's the lone Rhode island spot that had a blizzard, but several cities and towns in Massachusetts also met the criteria, the National Weather Service said Tuesday. The list includes Boston, Martha's Vineyard, Marshfield, Plymouth, and Hyannis. More locations could be added later, as the storm is not yet over.
To qualify as a blizzard, visibility has to sink below a quarter mile, due to falling or blowing snow. The winds have to be sustained at 35 mph or "frequently gust to 35" or higher, and those conditions must continue for three hours. Newport had a blizzard officially at 8:50 a.m., the weather service said.
