Newport Offers Relief For Citizens Affected By Shutdown
Certain Newport residents affected by the federal shutdown are being offered penalty-free delays on some taxes and fees

NEWPORT, RI — The City of Newport is offering citizens affected by the federal government shutdown some relief, according to a report. Those affected will be afforded municipal tax and fee relief.
On a case-by-case basis, the city will consider requests for delays on sewer, water and real estate tax payments without interest or added penalties, according to a Newport Daily News report.
City Manager Joseph Nicholson Jr. said the shutdown can hit home, regardless of how far away it may seem to some. "While we understand that the shutdown may seem like a distant issue, we also know that it can be a very real and personal matter for members of our local community," he said, according to the Daily News.
