Newport Police Grow Beards, Raise Money For Charity

Thursday was the last day for the beards. As of Dec. 1, the officers return to work clean-shaven.

NEWPORT, RI — They might not be recognizable on Dec. 1. But the officers who grew beards for charity in November have to shave them off, come Friday. It turned out many officers are happy to lose the facial hair. But they did it for charity and raised more than $3,000.

"We had a total of 62 active and retired officers (including Chief Silva) participate," Sgt. Joseph Carroll said. They raised and $3,100. "Half of that money will go to the No Shave November fund and the other half will go to the Newport Police Department Explorer program," he said.
