Newport Police: Thompson School Fight Lands Two Girls In Trouble

One 13-year-old girl was charged with Simple Assault or Battery.

NEWPORT, RI—Police have charged a 13-year-old girl with Simple Assault or Battery after witnesses said she punched another girl in the face. The juveniles was taken to the police station and ultimately released to her mother's custody. Her name is not being published because of her age.

According to the arrest report, teachers on Nov. 28 heard a commotion in the hallway and went to break up the fight between two girls. Police were called at 11:17 a.m. They interviewed the girls.

One girl said she was approached by a group who said the other teen wanted to fight. That girl said she was surprised because they are friends. She confronted her friend, and witnesses said the fight started. According to witnesses, the girls punched each other in the face. One knocked off the other's eyeglasses. Police said the victim had a cut, scratches and a swelling bump on the side of her face.

The mother of the girl being charged said she was surprised her daughter was accused of fighting since she had been bullied earlier.
