Meet Bo, Newport Police's Newest Therapy/Comfort Dog
Newport police say Bo will also learn how to sniff out explosives at public events in the city.

NEWPORT, RI — The Newport Police Department welcomed Bo, an energetic chocolate Labrador Retriever, who is being trained as a police therapy/comfort dog.
Bo was donated from Dame Dogs Labradors of Pascoag, and will partner with Community Police Officer Nick St. Lawrence in the Newport Community Policing Unit. Together, they’ll focus on strengthening relationships, providing support and connecting with the residents and visitors of Newport in a compassionate and meaningful way, Lt. Joseph Carroll said.
Local trainer Jess Gaes of Petrichor K9 will train Bo as a therapy/comfort K-9. Once certified, he will provide emotional support during challenging times, ease stress in community settings and bring a calming presence wherever he goes, Carroll said. The job will include outreach events and school visits to sensitive calls for service. Once Bo has completed training, he will receive additional training to be able to sniff out danger at public events to detect explosives.
