Newport Substances Abuse Task Force Seeks Service Award Nominations

NSAPTF needs nominations for its annual student service and community service awards.

NEWPORT, RI—The Newport Substances Abuse Prevention Task Force is looking for the next Youth Community Service and Jeanne Brown Community Service Award winners.

Nominations for either award are due by April 15.

The Youth Community Service award is given to two graduating teens living in the City of Newport. The $1,000 scholarship, provided by the North Family Trust, has been awarded for more than 10 years to deserving teens.

Winners are chosen based on their dedication to the community and efforts to reduce substance abuse.

"This can be seen in all forms of leadership and working with peers to have healthier decision making," a news release stated.

An application can be found at most youth serving organizations.

The Jeanne Brown Community Service Award is given to an adult community member "who has shown dedication to the community and primary prevention.

"We are looking for the unsung hero in youth development. We want to support the community by shining a light on these local leaders. The goal of the Task Force is to reduce the use of substances in our youth, but we know the good works by community members support our work without ever talking about substance abuse. The act of creating a healthier community has to be supported many different partners and leaders," the task force said in the release.

The NSAPTF acts as an advisory committee to the city of Newport to assist in the acquisition and implementation of substance abuse prevention programs to improve the quality of life for Newport residents, particularity youth.
