Obituary: Sister Irene Mary Griffith, 69, Sister of Mercy

Sister Irene Mary Griffith, 69, Sister of Mercy, a Sister of Mercy, died unexpectedly on January 27, 2016.

Born in New Bedford, MA. Sister was the daughter of the late Leo and Mary (Carew) Griffith. She was the sister of the late Leo Griffith and Dolores Griffith Taylor.

Sister Irene entered the Sisters of Mercy Community on September 8, 1964 and made perpetual vows on August 16, 1974. Sister Irene spent the majority of her teaching ministry in Newport, RI both at St. Mary School and at Newport County Catholic Regional School. Sister ministered at St. Mary Parish in Newport and throughout the wider Newport community.

Most recently, Sister served as Homemaker Caregiver at All About Home Care, LLC.

Sister’s life will be celebrated at St. Mary Church, Spring Street, Newport on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Calling hours will be held in the church from 9:30 to 11:00 am with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am. Sister Irene’s interment will be on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at 12 noon at Resurrection Cemetery in Cumberland.
