Photos: Coast Guard Saves 5, Helps 4 During Sailing Regatta Off Jamestown
The Coast Guard plucked two sailors out of the water when their catamaran capsized during a regatta around 1 p.m. Saturday.

NEWPORT, RI — Five people were in trouble in waters off Beavertail Lighthouse on Saturday after their catamaran capsized during a regatta. The Coast Guard said the local police called for help around 1 p.m. Two people had landed in the water, and three were still on the capsized vessel.
The officer also said a second 32-foot catamaran was disabled with a broken mast. Four people were aboard the second boat. Both crafts were part of a regatta.The seas were reported to be about five feet with 15 knot winds
Coast Guard Station Castle Hill responded with two 45-foot response boat crews. The first boat went to the capsized catamaran and pulled two people out of the water. The other three people were helped on to the rescue boat. The Coast Guard also towed the catamaran, which was brought to Dutch Island.

The second Coast Guard boat crew went to the catamaran with the broken mast .A nearby vessel had already taken it into tow. The Coast Guard crew escorted both vessels safely back to port.
No injuries were reported.
