Public Reminded of Training Exercise at Naval Station Newport

All entrances to the base will be closed for a period of time on Feb. 4 for planned training exercises.

NEWPORT, RI—Naval Station Newport is reminding the general public that there will be training exercises conducted at the base on Feb. 4.

The annual training is “designed to enhance the training and readiness of Navy security forces,” according to a Naval Station Newport news release.

The public is being asked to avoid non-essential trips to the installation on Feb. 4. The training “will impact recreational and retail facilities as well as area commands,” the release stated.

The exercises are part of Exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2016, which is being conducted on naval installations within the United States from Feb. 1 to 12.

At Naval Station Newport, events will take place in the morning after the majority of installation personnel are on the base. All gates will be closing for a brief time during the drill and again the following week upon direction from Fleet Forces Command.

“We do not anticipate traffic backups will impact the community but do request everyone’s support as we conduct these annual drills,” according to the release.

The public is reminded that the events are planned exercises and not in response to an actual emergency.
